Spyderco Matriarch Review - A Mean-Looking Pocket Knife…

Spyderco Matriarch Review

The Spyderco Matriarch is one mean-looking knife. It’s actually a slightly smaller version of the Spyderco Civilian, and both are designed to be defensive fighting knives…

And in this Spyderco Matriarch review we’re going to take a look at all of the important features on the knife. We’ll start by discussing the locking mechanism...

Locking Mechanism On The Spyderco Matriarch...

The Spyderco Matriarch uses the Back Lock locking mechanism. If you don’t know, the Back Lock is a very proven and very common locking system on folding pocket knives…

And there are really two main reasons why it is such a common locking mechanism. It’s very simple and very strong…

It works by incorporating a rocker arm that has a lug on the end of it. The lug engages with a notch in the tang of the blade…

The result is a very strong lock up. In addition to that, the Matriarch features something called the Boye Dent…

Basically, the Boye Dent is a scalloped portion on the release bar, and it’s important because it helps prevent you from accidentally unlocking the blade if you grip the knife too hard…

It’s a simple feature, but an important one I think, racially on a knife that is designed to be used as a self defense tool.

Blade Steel On The Spyderco Matriarch...

The blade steel on the Spyderco Matriarch is VG-10. VG-10 is a great knife steel for many reasons.

It was created in Japan and originally was intended to be used in the construction of Japanese Chefs knives. Today it’s used by many knife manufacturers, Spyderco uses it in many of their most popular designs…

Now VG-10 is popular because it resists rust and corrosion pretty well. In addition to that, it takes a fine edge and can hold that edge through a lot of use…

And when you do eventually wear down your edge, VG-10 isn’t a really difficult steel to sharpen. So like I said, it’s a great knife steel, and to make it even better, it’s not crazy expensive the way some other high quality knife steels are.

Size Of The Spyderco Matriarch…

Like I mentioned earlier, the Matriarch is a little bit smaller than it’s big brother, the Spyderco Civilian, but it’s still a relatively large knife…

The blade comes in at 3.57 inches long, and the handle is 4.98 inches long…

So the overall length on the Matriarch is around 8.55 inches long when the blade is locked out. I do want to add that even though it’s a decent size folding knife, it’s still pretty comfortable to carry around in your pocket.

Handle Material On The Matriarch...

The handle on the Matriarch is made from fiberglass reinforced nylon or FRN. FRN is a great handle material for a number of reasons…

First of all, FRN is extremely lightweight. It is still strong enough to handle pretty much any abuse you throw at it, but it’s super lightweight which makes the knife more comfortable to carry around in your pocket all day…

In addition to that, FRN is very comfortable to grasp in your hand, and when it’s textured properly (as is the case on the Matriarch) it allows you to grip the knife very solidly.

Pocket Clip On The Matriarch...

The pocket clip on the Matriarch gives you a lot of adjustability. Unlike with the Spyderco Civilian which limits you to tip up or tip down right handed carry…

...with the Civilian you can set the clip up for tip up or tip down carry, and it can be installed on either side of the knife.

That means you can set the Matriarch up for left handed or right handed carry, and it gives you as the user a lot of control over how you carry the knife.

Spyderco Matriarch Review - Conclusion…

In conclusion, I think the Spyderco Matriarch is an awesome pocket knife for several reasons. It has a simple and strong locking mechanism.

The VG-10 blade steel performs very well. It’s a great size to carry and to use as a defensive tool. And the handle is very comfortable to hold…
