Spyderco Civilian Review - An Amazing Knife With A Cool History...

Spyderco Civilian Review

Spyderco has come out with some really classic knife designs over the years…

One of those knives is the Civilian which was originally created as a defensive knife for DEA agents back in the day…

And in this Spyderco Civilian Review, we’re going to see why this knife has become a bit of a legend, and why so many people are still seeking it out to this day…

Let’s start by going over the locking mechanism...

Locking Mechanism On The Spyderco Civilian...

The locking mechanism on the Spyderco Civilian is a Back Lock. The back lock is a very common locking system when it comes to folding pocket knives…

People love it because it’s very simple and very strong. It works by incorporating a rocker that has a lug on the end of it…

That lug engages with a notch in the tang of the blade. The result is a very strong lock up when the blade is deployed…

Additionally, the Civilian has a Boye Dent. This is a scalloped portion on the release bar, which will help prevent you from accidentally unlocking the blade if you happen to grip the handle too tightly…

It’s a good extra safety feature to have, especially on a knife like the Civilian which is designed for self-defense.

Blade Steel On The Spyderco Civilian...

The blade steel on the Spyderco Civilian is VG-10. VG-10 is a fantastic blade steel, and there are several reasons why…

First of all, it was created in Japan with the intention of being used in Japanese chef’s knives. Eventually, it caught on with knife manufacturers, and today, Spyderco uses it in many of their most popular designs…

VG-10 is popular because it takes a fine edge and holds that edge for a pretty long period of time. It also doesn’t take a huge amount of effort or resharpen the way some knife steels do…

In addition to that, it also does a good job at resisting rust and corrosion, and it's a relatively affordable steel considering how well it performs as a blade material…

So in the end, VG-10 is an awesome choice of blade steel on the Civilian.

Size Of The Spyderco Civilian...

The Spyderco Civilian is a relatively large folding knife because it’s designed to be a fighting knife. It has a blade length that measures in at 4.09 inches long and the handle length is 5.20 inches long…

All that means that the overall length on the Civilian is around 9.29 inches when the blade is deployed. So as I said, it’s a pretty large knife when all is said and done (the Matriarch is kind of a smaller version of the Civilian).

Handle Material On The Spyderco Civilian...

The handle material on the Civilian is G-10. G-10 is a wonderful handle material on a pocket knife for many reasons…

First of all, it's a strong material that is going to hold up through tons and tons of abuse, which is important when you're talking about a defensive knife…

Secondly, it’s extremely comfortable to hold in your hand. It just feels good, which is probably why it’s such a popular knife handle material in general…

Last, it gives you a great amount of traction, so you can really get a good grip on the knife when you’re using it. Again, an extremely important feature when you’re talking about a defensive knife.

Pocket Clip On The Civilian...

The pocket clip on the Civilians Has some adjustability but is a little bit limited. It is two-position adjustable which means you can set the knife up to be carried tip up or tip down…

The downside to the clip design on the Civilian is that you are limited to right-handed carry because you can’t swap the clip to either side of the knife…

That’s kind of a bummer, but not a big deal if you are right-handed.

Spyderco Civilian Review - Conclusion…

So in the end, I think the Spyderco Civilian is an amazing pocket knife. It has a strong locking system. The blade steel is very solid and holds a fine edge…

It’s a great size for self-defense, but still comfortable to carry in your pocket, and the handle is comfortable and gives you a good hold on the knife…

Now if you want even more information about the Civilian, go to this website and you’ll see how it compares to a very similar knife from Spyderco, the Matriarch…

Well, that’s all for now! See you later!
